Abstract

This research is motivated by the low interest and ability to read and understand, especially in learning Indonesian. To overcome this problem, the researchers applied the Cooperative Integrated Reading and Composition (CIRC) learning model to increase interest and reading comprehension skills of grade VI students. The purpose of this study was to describe the application of the Cooperative Integrated Reading and Composition (CIRC) learning model to the interest and reading comprehension skills of sixth graders at SD Negeri Bunter 1 for the academic year 2021/2022. The Cooperative Integrated Reading and Composition (CIRC) learning model is learning that is carried out in groups. This learning is used to overcome the weaknesses of competitive and individualistic learning. Studying in groups will make students help each other in the learning process. The design used in this research is Classroom Action Research, which is carried out in two cycles. The instruments used in this study include the syllabus, lesson plans, reading interest observation sheets, teacher activity observation sheets, and reading comprehension test questions.

                The results showed that the students' reading interest increased in each cycle. The initial data obtained a percentage of 16% interest in reading in the low category, in the first cycle there was an increase in the percentage of 52% in the sufficient category. After making improvements again in the second cycle the percentage of students' interest in reading is 88% with a very good category. The ability to read comprehension has increased in each cycle. Students in the initial conditions obtained a percentage of 20% with an average value of 5.52, in the first cycle during learning a percentage of 56% was obtained with an average value of 6.76. After making improvements again in the second cycle the percentage of students' reading comprehension is 92% with an average value of 7.8. The ability to read comprehension has increased in each cycle. Based on the results of this study, it can be concluded that the Cooperative Integrated Reading and Composition (CIRC) learning model can increase interest and reading comprehension skills of sixth grade students at SD Negeri Bunter 1, Cimanggung District, Sumedang Regency.
